Broken Bow Lake is tucked away in the foothills of the Ouachita Mountains and covers 14,000 acres. #2. HIKING IN BEAVERS BEND & BROKEN BOW

Beavers Bend State Park is an ideal place to spend the day hiking through, bird watching, and enjoying nature in Ouachita National Forest.  There are many hiking trails ranging from 12 mile challenging hikes to short nature trails throughout the park.  Plan a picnic in the towering woods with a packed lunch at several sites in the park.  There are gorgeous views of Mountain Fork River to take in from the trails or see some wildlife, like eagles, deer, turkey, many species of birds and other animals during your hikes.  These parks have wonderful hiking amongst towering pines, rivers and vistas, whether you choose Skyline Trail, an 11.6-mile challenging hike winding through waterfalls and mountain peaks, to the Lookout Mountain, a 1.9 mile easy trail with incredible views, or hike up and down the Lower Mountain Fork River, you are sure to find the trail that suits you best.  The area is known for long fall color season from late October and early November where the forest begins to transform from lush green to brilliant shades of gold and bright crimson.  There is so much nature to see in Broken Bow, you won’t be disappointed.

#16. BEAVERS BEND DEPOT & TRAIL RIDES

Take a train ride on a 1/3 size replica of the C.P.Huntington S.P. train with Beavers Bend Depot & Trail Rides through beautiful Beavers Bend State Park game reserve. The train runs 2 times per hour and the ride usually takes 15-20 minutes. Riders will sometimes spot some native wildlife, go up and down Wahoo Hill and run through through the train tunnel before pulling back into the station…don’t forget your camera.

If you want to feel some wind in your face and see some incredible views of the Ouachita National Forest & Ouachita Mountain range, less than an hour drive north is Talimena National Scenic Byway, a breathtaking 54-mile route known for spectacular fall foliage and gorgeous floral displays in spring.  Make your way through one of the highest mountain ranges between the Rockies and the Appalachians and view one stunning panorama after another through the winding road nestled in the heart of Choctaw Country.  Designated a National Scenic Byway in 2005, the two-lane road features hiking trails and 22 scenic pull-outs at various points along the route.
